RISAA  Shore Angler Of The Year - Dick Geldard    Reprinted from RISAA newsletter

Dick has been fishing for over 64 years….amazing!

He started fishing at age 8 in Matunuck since his parents owned a summer house in the area. At age 13 he would catch 7-8 bass

a day and sell them for 25 cents a pound. He dropped fishing a bit in the 1950’s to raise his family, but now that they are off on their own he has again picked up the sport. His favorite fish to catch are stripers and was taught many techniques by a local pro. The favorite baits he uses are the “black of wood,” smiling bills, split tail pork rinds, feathered jigs, Adam P40’s, eels and needlefish. He prefers conventional gear and enjoys fishing from boat and shore. Dick’s most memorable fishing adventure was out on Cuttyhunk with his son one late summer/early fall evening from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am as they landed one striper

after another with all the fish over 30lbs. This year Dick also achieved another milestone by weighing in a 4.4 lb winter flounder from shore which is now in the RISAA Hall of Fame.

. Congratulations to Dick …what an honor!

I am pleased to announce that Dave Beutel of  the RI Coastal Resources Management Council Aquaculture Coordinator will be speaking to us at our February  meeting. Dave has spoken to the club several times in the past will be giving us a presentation on both the Ocean SAMP (marine spatial planning

that includes the wind power project) and aquaculture changes in RI.

Andy Lemar

NPSA combined with the Narragansett Surfcasters have been asked by the family of Andy Lemar to sell much of Andy’s left over fishing equipment. Marty explained that the equipment will be sold off in a yard sale format and will take place at the Narragansett community center on the evening of the 3rd Tuesday of April (19th).  The proceeds will benefit Andy’s estate and is held exclusively for the members of  the Narragansett Pier Sport fishing Assoc. and The Narragansett Surfcasters.  Andy was a valued friend and member of both clubs and this will be a great benefit to his family.

A great loss to the recreational fishing world.

Obituary for ROBERT A. POND

Robert A. Pond, noted outdoor writer, conservationist and businessman,

died December 26, 2009 at Attleboro, Massachusetts. He was 92 years of age.

Bob Pond is also know within the East Coast saltwater fishing community

as "Mr. Striped Bass" for his selfless efforts to save the Striped Bass

from extinction. The Striped Bass was and remains today the premier

recreational saltwater fishing species along the East Coast. In face

of declining numbers of Striped Bass in the ‘70s Bob mobilized the

members of Stripers Unlimited, an organization he had earlier founded to

lobby both state and federal agencies, resulting in the Emergency

Striped Bass Act of 1979, sponsored by Senator John Chaffee of Rhode

Island.

In 1945 Bob developed his famous Atom plug, testing it in the Cape Cod

Canal and manufacturing it in Attleboro. In his sales travels up and

down the coast he noted a desire among striper fishermen to fish other

states and so he developed the Tri-State Tournament in 1965 in which

local clubs in Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island sponsor a weekend

visit to their local hot fishing spots. The Tri-State exists today as

an honor code catch-and-release tournament.

Using his income from the Atom plug, in the early 1970s Bob began a

series of research trips to the Striped Bass spawning rivers of

Maryland. He also attracted fish scientists and state hatchery

personnel to join in his work. It was on these trips that Bob began to

see serious deformities in spawning population and put out the

call to get Federal monies to research the problem. His efforts

resulted in the Act of 1979, a subsequent moratorium, and eventual

resurgence of the Striped Bass in the 1990s. In all these efforts he

was assisted by Avis Boyd, who he later married.

Bob was born and raised in New Rochelle, New York and graduated from

Syracuse University Forestry College, an education he credited for his

life-long conservationism. During WW II Bob worked as a munitions

inspector for the British, and later, the American governments.

He is survived by his wife Avis Boyd.

11/6/08 Great time at the NPSA meeting last night and the new club T-shirts are on there way! by Bruce Weinstein

Last nights meeting  was a good time with a great group of members present. Club member "Captain Bonito" Roger Lima let us in on some of his his secrets on bagging bonito and false albacore  during his excellent seminar. Thanks Roger! Also, Ed Folgo brought a new club T-shirt to the meeting and after some talking we decided to have some t-shirts produced to be ready for the next monthly meeting with some outstanding original artwork from Sue Lima, Roger Lima's wife. Below is a t-shirt prototype  made by our graphic designer member Eddy Stahowiak.  After the meeting we tipped the elbows at  PJ's Pub and traded some good fishing  stories and had a lot of laughs. I had a great time!

10/31/08 Monthly Seminar notice by Dave Fewster

Great news ! I was able to move Roger Limas bonito seminar to the November meeting. Roger is well known for his talent on catching these elusive speedsters with his little tricks and sudle tweaks in his tackle and approach. While most of us are still chasing these northern bonefish we usually pass Roger posing for pictures with the catch of the day.

Over the years members have created many memorial tournament awards permanently recognizing various member anglers. We've  done our best to include these memorials correctly in our 2008 tournament leader board but we urge all members to look it over and let me know of any corrections that need to be be made. Contact Bruce at bruceweinstein@cox.net if you find any corrections or additions that need to be made anywhere on the website.

5/8/8 Tournament News by Bruce Weinstein

The tournament committee met on April 8th and voted in three changes to our tournament rules . The changes have not been permanently written into the bylaws yet, but will be soon. Here's a short summary  of the changes. (1) A fish can  be weighed into ONLY ONE tournament category. That means that no fish can take more than one trophy. (2) All weights must be in pounds using two decimal places. This replaces using "pounds and ounces". (3) Tuna will be measured by fork length, minimum 28". This replaces tuna being measured by the weight. The tournament commitee members present at the meeting were Marty Wencek, Mike  Lanni, Bob Andrade and Bruce Weinstein. John Kennedy also took part in the meeting by phone several times.  Report written by Bruce W.
